LIVINGSTON, NJ —On Monday, Newark Academy paid tribute to 2017 graduate Anthony Giachin on its Twitter feed - and with good reason.

Giachin recently graduated from Army West Point after an illustrious baseball career in which he was honored for his achievements on and off the field.

This past season, Giachin, a third baseman, helped lead the Black Knights (28-25) to a Patriot League title and the NCAA Tournament, where they lost to Texas Tech and UCLA. The 6-foot, 215-pound Giachin hit .303, scored a team-high 38 runs and had three homers, 32 RBIs and eight stolen bases. He earned First-Team All-Patriot League honors.

This was the third time Giachin was named first-team all-conference, and no postseason honors were handed out during his pandemic-shortened junior campaign. He also was the Patriot League Rookie of the Year in 2018.

Giachin's 2019 season was legendary, as he set the school record for multi-hit games in a season (25) and tied the school record for RBIs in a season (67).

In four seasons, the lefty-swinging, righty-throwing Giachin appeared in all 190 games for the Black Knights, starting all but one contest.

This past season, Giachin was named the Patriot League Baseball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and he was a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-America. The Times Herald-Record of Middletown, New York, which covers Army, said Giachin's cumulative grade point average in college was 3.949.

"You can't say anything more about him . . . he's won all the awards here. He's been All-American. He’s probably the best all-around student-athlete I’ve ever coached," Army West Point coach Jim Foster said.

The Times Herald-Record reported that upon graduation in May, Giachin was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. The paper said that Giachin's next stop will be Oxford University in England, where he will pursue a one-year master's degree in biotechnology. After that, he plans to learn to fly helicopters as an aviation officer in the Army.

Giachin told the Times Herald-Record that he initially had some reservations about attending the Academy, but he quickly fell in love with West Point.

"Just the idea that it stands for something bigger than yourself, that willingness to serve others, help others, the integrity and all those values that goes into this place really made it so special," Giachin said.

Giachin added: "The experiences, this baseball team and organization and the entire support group that I've had has been absolutely phenomenal. And it's been like nothing I've ever experienced. It's developed me into a better person, player, officer. It has been the greatest experience of my life and I really wouldn't trade it for the world."
