Students Solve Riddles for Statue Scavenger Hunt

'Everyone sees [the sculptures] from their cars but you really have to get out and see the details,' said Beth Lippman, executive director of the Livingston's Business Improvement District.

Livingston’s youngest residents became sleuths Tuesday as they tried to solved the Youth Appreciation Week’s townwide scavenger hunt.

Children and parents received a list of clues at town center that corresponded to each of the 12 life-like Seward Johnson sculptures in Livingston. Beth Lippman, executive director of the Livingston’s Business Improvement District, was at town center handing out the clues throughout the balmy afternoon and said the scavenger hunt was an opportunity for everyone to get a close-up view of the famous artwork.

“Everyone sees [the sculptures] from their cars but you really have to get out to see the details,” said Lippman.

In addition to deciphering the clues, students were asked, "What would they have named the sculptures?"

Around 4 p.m. yesterday, Lauren and Rachel Herz were just beginning the scavenger hunt at town center and found their first sculpture not too far, who was sitting on a blanket in the grass near Mt. Pleasant Valley Avenue.

Rachel said she was already familiar with many of the statues, but wanted to do the scavenger hunt because she thought “it was really going to be fun.”

Further south on Livingston Avenue at the statue of a man standing over a garbage can in front of George Press Fine Jewelers, Patrick Zotti said he and his younger sister Shannon were well on their way toward completing the scavenger hunt.

Shannon said was getting stumped on thinking of what to rename the statues, but was getting help from her brother.

“I’m thinking of naming the one by town hall, Calorie Burner,” said Patrick, speaking about the statue of a woman running.
