Board of Ed. Candidates Night, Fire Dept. Open House, Senior CarFit and More in October

September may nearly be over, but Livingston has no shortage of events and programs scheduled for the next two months.

Wednesday, Oct. 2:  Candidates Night for the Livingston Board of Education will begin at  8:00 p.m. at the Senior & Community Center, at 204 Hillside Avenue. 

That night, you can meet incumbents Ronnie Spring, current board president, and Leslie Winograd and challenger Arthur Altman. The three will contend for two open spots on the board in the Nov. 5 election. Each seat carries three-year terms. 

Sunday, Oct. 6:  Fire Department Open House from 1-5 p.m. at Fire Headquarters, at 62 Livingston Ave.

Monday, Oct. 7: Senior CarFit will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Senior & Community Center, at 204 Hillside Ave. 

CarFit is an educational program that offers senior drivers the opportunity to check how well their personal vehicles “fit” them and to highlight actions they can take to improve their fit.  

A team of trained technicians and occupational therapy practitioners work with each participant to ensure they fit their vehicle properly for maximum comfort and safety.  

The entire process takes about 20 minutes.  

Participants will leave with recommended car adjustments and adaptations in several areas including line of sight, mirror adjustment and good foot positioning on the gas and brake pedals. Tuesday, Oct. 8: Roll up your sleeve and give some blood at the upcoming Livingston blood drive and be entered to win tickets to Super Bowl XLVIII.  

Saturday, Oct. 12:  Livingston's fall electronics recycling and paper shredding event will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Senior & Community Center, at 204 Hillside Ave. Click here for a full list of what can and can't be recycled. 

Saturday, Oct. 12:  Zumba for the Cure from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Senior & Community Center, at 204 Hillside Ave. 

Come out to show support for those affected with breast cancer. Registration is required which can be done at the community center or at www.livingstonsyls.org. Donations will be collected at the door on the day of the event in form of cash or check made payable to: Saint Barnabas Ambulatory Care Center. Thursday, Oct. 17th:  Bicentennial Gala Celebration will be held at the Crystal Plaza, at 305 W. Northfield Ave., starting at 6:30 p.m. An exciting celebration of Livingston’s history and our future, featuring food, drinks, music, celebration, and a silent art auction courtesy of the Livingston Arts Council.

Tickets are $150 per person.

Saturday, Oct. 26:  It's Livingston Fright Night for Kids from 3:30-10 p.m., at the Senior & Community Center, at 204 Hillside Ave. The event will feature a costume contest, trick or treating, a haunted walk and various activities. Wednesday, Nov. 6:  "Livingston’s Military Heroes ... in Their Own Words" will be screened at 7 p.m. at the Livingston Public Library. This specially created movie features veterans from WWII through the War in Afghanistan discussing their experiences.

Friday, Nov. 8: A Veteran’s Day luncheon will begin at 11:30 a.m. Lunch will be served at noon.  Entertainment with Marggie Worsdale “WWII Songs and Letters”. The event is free but registration is required at the Senior & Community Center office or online at www.livingstonsyls.org.

Sunday, Nov. 24:  The township's annual inter-faith Thanksgiving service will have a special emphasis on giving thanks for 200 years of a caring, thriving, healthy community.
