Long Branch Police: Beware Of These Rental Scams

Don't fall for these if you are looking to rent a home.

Some rental scams have surfaced in Monmouth County recently and the Long Branch Police Department wants you to know what to avoid.

For example, individuals posing as rental property owners will tell potential renters that they are out-of-town or unable to meet you at the property. They promise to mail the keys to you once they receive a deposit.

"In reality, they are a scammer who is using property information found online and you will never see the keys!" according to the police department's Facebook page.

The police department advises potential renters to never send money, a wire transfer or a prepaid card. Never give personal information over the phone. Do not rent from anyone other than a legitimate realtor or sales agent.

Make sure you meet the owner at the property and make sure you have access to the property before you agree to the rental.
