SPCA Saves Deer With Bowl Stuck On Head

The buck was unable to eat or drink for four days, SPCA says.

COLTS NECK, NJ - If the SPCA and state Division of Fish and Wildlife officers hadn't come along when they did, the deer probably would have died.

A resident here notified them on Thursday about a young buck who somehow had gotten a glass bowl stuck on his head. He had been ostracized by his herd and had to wait until they were gone to try and eat, according to the SPCA's Facebook page.

The SPCA and Fish and Wildlife officers had to wait until he appeared again. When he did, they had to sedate the buck so they could remove the bowl to save his life.

"After he was safe to approach, the glass bowl was removed, which turned out to be a light fixture cover which probably had been filled with water the deer tried to drink," the post states.

The buck was dehydrated after four days without food and water. He had a couple of scrapes, probably from not being able to see properly with the bowl on his head.

The deer was able to get up once the sedative had worn off and the officers had cleaned him up.

"We’re thankful we have such a dedicated team of professionals who go above and beyond for all species and we can do it all because of supporters like you," the SPCA post states.
