9-Year-Old Madison Resident Pens Books, Raises $2,000 for Morris Families in Need
Colao's short series about inspiring individuals has raised $2,000 for Family Promise of Morris County. A reading will be held on Dec. 18.
A 9-year-old Madison resident has written and sold a series of short books to raise funds for Family Promise of Morris County. So far, Benjamin Colao’s books have raised more than $2,000 to help local families in need.
“At first, this series was just a school series for my classmates to enjoy, but it all changed when I was offered a chance to be a published author,” Colao explained. “This is not for fame. This is not for money. It is to help people. Sure, I am a 9-year old author, but a 9-year-old author for a cause, a BIG cause.”
Ben and his family first learned about Family Promise at St. Vincent Martyr Parish, a congregation that has supported the homeless families and single women Family Promise serves for many years. Ben and his friend, George Csaltos, the illustrator for the books’ covers, are excited about using their talents to make a difference.

“I want people that are less fortunate to have the same opportunities as the rich and famous,” Colao expressed. “And that is what is going to happen.”
To date, Ben has raised over $2,000. The first four books in the series are mini biographies about Harry Houdini, Steve Jobs, Walt Disney and George Washington.

Ben has other books in production and will soon interview Family Promise guests to write a book about homeless families. Community members are asked to support Ben and George’s efforts by buying books and making donations to offset copying costs.
