Dan Rather Says '60 Minutes' Retraction Differs From His CBS Fallout

'Ours was a true story,' he says in interview at Drew University.

Before speaking to a sold-out crowd in Madison to kick off the Drew Forum lecture series Tuesday, Dan Rather discussed a difference between a recent "60 Minutes" retraction and his own fallout with the network.

Lara Logan recently retracted an Oct. 27 report about the attack on a U.S. mission in Benghazi, Libya, after it was learned a source gave "60 Minutes" and the FBI different accounts what happened.

Rather said the difference between the Benghazi report and a report he gave on President George W. Bush's National Guard service that preceded his separation from the network is that his report was true.

"Ours was a true story," he told Drew University's Ted Johnsen in an interview on the Madison campus.

The process for authenticating memos in the National Guard story was attacked, but no one otherwise denied the truth of the report, Rather said.

He said Logan is a good person and a good journalist.

"I know somewhat what it feels like to be alone, to feel everyone is blaming you," he said.

In his lecture, Rather shared his observations about a variety of issues in the U.S. and around the world, including the political climate in the U.S., the importance of a politician's tone, and the threat posed by Iran, according to Morristown Green.
