The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey opens its 53rd season later this month with “The Royal Family.”

“The Royal Family”, a Tony Award-winning American classic by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, begins on Wednesday, may 27 and will continue through Sunday, June 21 at the F.M. Kirby Shakespeare Theatre, 36 Madison Ave. in Madison.

The award-winning production, first performed in 1927, portrays the Cavendish family as they struggle to balance the demands of family life with the bonds of their artistic calling, the Theatre said.

Artistic Director Bonnie J. Monte will direct the season opener.“All of our selections this season present extraordinary tales of kith and kin,” Monte said in a release. “This Theatre is home to a diverse, lively family of artists and audience members, who make working at the Theatre feel like a family adventure.”

The cast of “The Royal Family” include Elizabeth Shepherd, Roxanna Hope, Benjamine Sterling, Samantha Bruce, Matt Sullivan, Allison Mackie, Edmond Genest, Patrick Boll, Emma O’Donnell and Patrick Toon. Jordan Buhat, Louise Heller, Ryan McCarthy and Tug Rice round out the cast.
