Tsukamoto, Catalanello, McDowell Breeze Through Primary

Frelinghuysen easily defeats Luzzi in Congressional primary.

UPDATED AT 12:24 p.m.–Council President Jeannie Tsukamoto and fellow republican Rob Catalanello both won Tuesday's primary for two open borough council seats in November's general election.

Both ran uncontested.

Democrat Bob McDowell won his primary to challenge Tsukamoto and Catalanello for one of the two spots.

Tsukamoto won with 636 votes, Catalanello with 611, and McDowell with 233. One write-in was submitted for Republican council member and 15 were submitted Democratic council member. A single Democratic candidate would have needed to receive 14 write-in votes to appear on the November ballot. No one candidate received that many.

In Congressional District 11, Representative Rodney Frelinghuysen unofficially out-gained Republican challenger Richard Luzzi (Chatham) in Madison 587 votes to 157. The Star Ledger reported with 97 percent of precincts reporting, Frelinghuysen defeated Luzzi with 76 percent of the votes.

For the Democrats, Douglas Herbert unofficially out-gained challenger James Kelly Jr., 174 votes to 45. The Star Ledger also reported with 97 percent of precincts reporting, Herbert defeated Kelly with 72 percent of the vote.

Mark Dombrowski unofficially received 200 votes in the borough in the Democratic primary for Morris County Sheriff and Republican Edward Rochford received more votes in Madison than challenger Steven Olimpio 535-184. Rochford won the county primary with 65.61 percent of the votes. Rochford won the county primary with 65.61 percent of the votes.

Ann Grossi, Douglas Cabana and Tom Mastrangelo took the three Republican County Freeholder spots in the primary, defeating the eight other challengers. In Madison, the top three vote getters were Grossi, Mastrangelo, and Cabana in that order.

All three Democratic candidates for Freeholder will appear on the ballot in November, as they ran uncontested.

But voter turnout was low on Madison. Of the 9,922 registered voters in Madison, only 1,000, or 10 percent, came out to vote on Tuesday.
