New Details Released For Hotel Implosion In North Jersey (UPDATED)

MAHWAH, NJ — The iconic Sheraton Crossroads hotel in Mahwah, a landmark since 1987, will be demolished this coming weekend.

Township officials released details on Wednesday afternoon about the upcoming implosion of the 22-story hotel, and which roads will close.

The hotel, seen from Route 17 near the New Jersey/New York border, was known for its rows of gleaming glass windows. It was also the site of weddings, dances, and other events.

It finally closed its doors in December 2023. The developers planned to build two warehouses on the site, but say they are now considering other uses. READ MORE: Readers React To Sheraton Crossroads Closing

"Growing up in NJ then raising kids in VT, our southbound travels were marked by this building," wrote a Patch reader after the closure was announced in 2023. "I called it 'Spidey’s Tower.' "

Timing And How To Watch

Town officials said Wednesday that the hotel will likely come tumbling down around 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, although the time may change. They also noted that this is a private event, not run by the town. But they wanted to make residents aware.

"This is a serious construction event that involves the implosion of a multi-story building," they said. "The site and the event are regulated by the State of New Jersey Dept. of Labor, a very experienced implosion contractor, the general contractor for the developer, the New Jersey State Police, the Mahwah Police and other Township personnel."

The town said that on Saturday morning:

• The Crossroads/Sheraton property is closed to all non-credentialed personnel. Do Not attempt to enter the site either from Route 17, Mountainside Ave, the Jaguar Land Rover exit, or via the Ramapo River. You will be removed by onsite security and/or the police.
• On The Day of the Event – the property will remain closed to all non-credentialed personnel. Do Not attempt entry from any direction via automobile, ATV, or on foot.

Road Closures

The town said that on Saturday, until the all-clear signal is given post-implosion, parts of Stag Hill Road and other local roads will be closed to vehicular traffic. These include: First Street, Meadow Avenue at State Street, Long Avenue, Johnson Avenue, Catherine Avenue, Brook Street, Strysko Avenue, Sustack Place, and South Street.

The State Police will be patrolling the local highways from 5 a.m. until after the “all-clear” is given post-implosion.

No one will be permitted to park on the shoulders of Routes 17 or 287 prior to the implosion (slated for approximately 7:30 am). They will ask anyone parked to move and may tow.

Anywhere from 15 to several minutes prior to the implosion, the State Police will slow and then completely stop all highway vehicular traffic in the vicinity of the Sheraton site. The traffic will be stopped until the “all clear” signal is given from the implosion director.

"This could be anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes after the event," they said.

• "There are several locations in and around the Township that still have a view/partial view of the building. While you cannot drive into or park at some of these locations, they are available on foot. Be mindful of where you are to ensure you are not encroaching or located on private property, or parking illegally. "
