MAPLEWOOD, NJ — Essex County announced receiving two grants this month for a total of $46 from the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority, the largest award given through the agency's Local Safety Program.

Among 54 roads that will be upgraded, the county will work on one in Maplewood and two in South Orange.

The main fixes will include brighter LED lighting in traffic signals, new signage, and roadway striping, as well as "back-up power to ensure signals begin working if there is an electrical failure, and a camera system to enable traffic signals along shared corridors to be synchronized to maximize traffic flow.”
