Car Hits Child, Mother On 2nd Day Of School Year In Maplewood: Police

The driver was issued multiple summonses, including failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

MAPLEWOOD, NJ — A car hit a young child and his mother near a school in Maplewood on the second day of the new school year, authorities said.

According to the Maplewood Police Department, the car-pedestrian strike took place at 3:49 p.m. on Wednesday at the intersection of Boyden Avenue and Tuscan Road, near Seth Boyden Elementary School.

The pedestrians – an adult woman and her 5-year-old son – declined medical transport and chose to have a family member drive them to a nearby hospital. Both were later released from the hospital with minor injuries, authorities said.

Police released the following details about the investigation:

“After an on-scene investigation, it was determined that the driver of a 2014 Honda Pilot – [a 60-year-old Little Falls resident] – was traveling north on Boyden Avenue. She came to the intersection of Boyden Avenue and Tuscan Road when she made a left turn onto Tuscan Road. [She] reported that she did not see the pedestrians in the crosswalk and did not stop in time.”
