Judge Rules Complaint Should Move Forward

A Bloomfield municipal court judge ruled a complaint accusing a Maplewood bartender of assaulting a patron should move forward. 

Chief Municipal Magistrate Judge John A. Paparazzo found probable cause Jan. 24 after hearing testimony from 24-year-old South Orange resident, Ethan Kresofsky, accusing St. James’s Gate Publick House's bartender, James Meade, of assault.

Cryan's Closes, Locals React

Cryan's Beef and Ale House, the popular South Orange bar and restaurant that was a South Orange mainstay for 30 years, announced it had closed its doors effective Jan. 1, according to a recent Twitter posting.

The tweet from Cryan’s said in part, "due to the recession and economy we have closed our doors for business" effective Jan. 1, 2013.

Man Arrested for Burglary after Foot Chase

Maplewood Police officers arrested a Linwood man Jan. 24 after he allegedly burglarized a Milton Street home, according to Capt. John Perna.

Three officers caught 32-year-old John P. Mitchell, after he allegedly broke into the home near the Millburn border and then led police on a foot chase, said Perna. 

Burglaries Spiked in 2012 in Maplewood

Burglaries in Maplewood township increased by 82% in 2012, the largest increase in several years, according to Police Chief Robert Cimino.

"Brook Park" Could Blossom in Maplewood

Former Maplewood Mayor Fred Profeta wants to pay forward his enjoyment of a small triangle of land next to Crooked Brook off Woodland Road by helping to build a pocket park there. He presented his plan at the last township committee meeting, offering to pay $20,000 of the costs of designing and building the park, which he estimates will total roughly $40,000.

Township Begins Springfield Avenue Project

The township broke ground on a mixed-use residential and commercial building at 1611 Springfield Ave. in Maplewood on Wednesday, Jan. 9.

The project, which has been in the works for several years, will feature 5,275 square feet of retail space on the ground floor as well as six apartments on the second floor.
