Fire Was Deliberately Set Inside Sayreville Motel, Police Say

A person had to be rescued from their motel room after police say they deliberately started a fire inside the Gallery Holiday motel Tuesday.

SAYREVILLE, NJ — A person had to be rescued from their motel room after police say they deliberately started a fire inside the Gallery Holiday motel Tuesday morning in Sayreville.

The call of the fire came in at 8:56 a.m. Tuesday, said Sayreville Police. The motel is located at 2020 Rt. 35 north and the fire started in room 125. Responding units arrived to find visible fire and smoke coming from the room.

Officers Teator and Pirigyi immediately ran into the room and successfully rescued the occupant. The occupant was transported to Barnabas Burn Center for burn injuries. A police officer was also transported to RWJ Hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The fire was quickly extinguished, by the Sayreville Fire Department, ensuring the safety of the surrounding guests and property.

The person staying in the room was charged with second-degree aggravated arson, aggravated arson - causing a fire that insured emergency services personnel, third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree causing or rising widespread injury or damage and fourth-degree obstruction.
