Matawan Woman Admitted Leaving Scene Of 2024 Accident That Killed Pedestrian

MATAWAN, NJ — A Matawan woman admitted leaving the scene of a 2024 accident that killed an Aberdeen woman, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago announced Tuesday.

Sonia Gomez, 65, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of second-degree Leaving the Scene of a Motor Vehicle Fatality, before Judge Joseph Oxley. She faces up to three years in state prison when she is sentenced Aug. 14.

At 7:24 p.m. Sept. 4, 2024, in Aberdeen Township, Aberdeen Police responded to the intersection of Atlantic Avenue and 2nd Street for a report of a pedestrian struck. Upon arrival, officers discovered a woman lying in the road.

The pedestrian, later identified as Judith Fox-Hernandez, 58, of Aberdeen, was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she would later succumb to her injuries on September 29.

Fox-Hernandez was struck by a 2015 Honda Pilot, driven by Gomez. Gomez did not stop at the time of the crash at the scene, nor did she report the collision to law enforcement.
