Perth Amboy Says It Was Not An Explosive Device Found At Construction Site
What was initially thought to be an explosive device found in Perth Amboy Wednesday was actually a non-explosive cylinder.

PERTH AMBOY, NJ — What was initially feared to be an explosive device found in Perth Amboy Wednesday was actually a non-explosive cylinder left over from when the area used to be a scrap metal yard.
Construction was being done Wednesday at Borinqueneer Park (the former Harry Goldberg & Sons scrap metal site) on Second Street, and a cylinder was found, said a spokeswoman for the city of Perth Amboy.
Perth Amboy Police were called in and they set up a perimeter around the park, while the object was investigated.

"It has been determined that the cylinder was a container left from the site’s prior use as a scrap yard, and there was no danger to the public. All units cleared the scene within two and a half hours," said the city of Perth Amboy in a statement. "Some misinformation has circulated on social media, so we encourage residents to stay informed, verify sources and rely on official City channels for accurate information."
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency continues to oversee cleanup at the site and is in the process of placing a protective layer of screened soil at the park. This work is scheduled to be completed by September 8, followed by the installation of a retaining wall and asphalt cover.
