Matawan will be trading shade for some peace of mind during the next big storm that blows through the Bayshore.

The Borough Council accepted a bid from Greenscape Landscape Contractor, Inc., to remove trees on roads that are set to be repaved during the 2013 road program. The project is expected to cost the borough $53,800.

The street tree removal contract allows Greenscape Landscape Contractor, Inc. to take down trees along streets that are due to be repaved. Although it was approved unanimously by the council during their special  meeting July 11, there the council expressed some regrets.

“The canopy of trees is beautiful but I realize it is very dangerous,” said Councilman Tom Fitzsimmons. He added that even though removing canopies of trees in communities like Marc Woods might disrupt the scenic environment, it is “necessary” in preventing extended power outages during storms like Irene and Sandy.

Sandy whipped through the borough and left some area residents in the dark for as many as 11 days. Electrical technicians were not just repairing transformers but also replacing poles and power lines pulled down by trees. This delayed restoration efforts, Fitzsimmons said.
