Cedar Hill Prep Debate Team Competes in the Garden State Debate League

On Saturday, December 3rd, Cedar Hill Prep School’s Debate Team competed in their first in person competition since COVID-19. The competition took place at Saddle River Day School and they competed against 7 other schools. CHP took 11 teams to the debate. We had 33 participants and more than 50% of the students were novice debaters. Two teams were from grade 6, 5 teams were from grade 7 and 4 teams were from grade 8.

Since this was the first face-to-face debate in two years, debaters were nervous. The interesting topics that they either had to propose or oppose were; “TikTok is a bad influence”, “homework does more harm than good”, and “ raise the minimum wage in New Jersey”.

After an intense and fascinating battle, CHP placed 2nd in the tournament. This is an incredible accomplishment to have placed 2nd with more than 60% of our debaters being novice debaters!

CHP had the top two teams out of 48 teams in the competition. Out of 138 speakers, Motunrayo O (8th grade) was the number 2 speaker in the league and our top speaker for CHP. The number 5 speaker in the league was Mahadev M. (8th grade), the number 6 speaker was Rishabh D. (8th grade), the number 13 speaker was Tanvi P. (8th grade), the number 15 speaker was Sophia L. ( 7th grade), the number 18 speaker was Narayan L. (8th grade), the number 19 speaker was Ayan J. (7th grade) and the number 20 speaker was Nitara B. (7th grade).

Our next tournament will be on home grounds, February 4th and we are aiming for that number one spot! Go CHP!
