Cedar Hill Prep School has signed a joint venture agreement with the New Jersey Institute of Nature (NJIN) with the intent of providing its students real life connections to classroom content. They are focused on preparing young people to gain skills that are aligned with the UN sustainable development goals. The goal is to curate immersive experiences that allow space for young people to harness their talents, and work towards their aspirations of being social innovators and purpose driven ventures.

NJIN has a 50- acre farm in Fredon where students can participate in research surrounding topics such as sustainability, pond ecology, nitrogen fixation and carbon sequestration. Cedar Hill Prep’s fifth through eighth grade students recently attended a field trip to the farm and had the opportunity to experiment and experience a personal and interactive education.

The fifth and sixth graders began their experience with meditation and then branched out into different groups for a scavenger hunt, horse knowledge and expository sensory writing. During lunch time, the students learned about the history of the area and were read “ The Hidden Life of Trees”,which allowed them to open up their minds and see that plants are social beings just as people and animals are. The day ended with a meditative moment as they parted with the farm for now.

The seventh and eighth grade students learned about patterns and fractals in nature while being surrounded by beautiful, ever changing foliage. Their teachers created an interdisciplinary lesson that focused on being an explorer and allowed their students to sit near ponds and lakes while listening to the soothing sounds of nature. NJIN enhanced Cedar Hill Prep’s classroom learning by engaging in hands-on experiential learning and now the students can’t wait to visit again soon!
