The fire broke out at 1:41 a.m. Thursday at a home on the corner of Mountain Avenue and Voorhees Avenue.
MIDDLESEX, NJ — A home was badly damaged by a fire Wednesday night in Middlesex borough, said police in that town.
The fire broke out at 1:41 a.m. Thursday at a home on the corner of Mountain Avenue and Voorhees Avenue. Responding Middlesex borough police officers ensured that all occupants safely evacuated the home; homes next door were also evacuated.
The all-volunteer Middlesex Fire Department arrived and requested a second alarm to battle heavy smoke and flames. There were no reported injuries to residents, firefighters or pets, but the fire was so big that mutual aid did have to be called in from nearby towns. Bound Brook, Green Brook, New Market, River Road, North Stelton, South Bound Brook, Somerset, Finderne and South Plainfield all responded.

“We are grateful for the devotion and sacrifice of our volunteer firefighters from Middlesex borough and our surrounding communities who worked together in the early hours of the morning to extinguish the fire," said Police Chief Matthew Geist. "To the family that was displaced by this fire, we recognize that it was a tremendous loss but we are thankful that no one was injured as a result of the blaze.”
The police department urges residents to check their smoke detectors and practice fire escape routes.
