Candidate Profile: Monisha Amaral For Millburn Board Of Ed 2021

MILLBURN, NJ — With her background working on Wall Street, as well as her passion for STEM education, Monisha Amaral believes she has a lot to offer to Millburn's Board of Education.

Amaral is one of eight candidates vying for three seats on Millburn's Board of Education this election season.

1. What is your background?

"I'm Monisha Amaral, a mom of 3 boys in elementary and middle school. My undergraduate degree is a Bachelors in Computer Engineering and a Masters from the London School of Economics. I work for a Wall Street Bank as an Senior Executive with significant financial experience in budgets, expenses and bond issuance.

"I'm in the PTO for Glenwood and Millburn Middle school. I volunteer for several organizations in our area Millburn soccer club, Boy Scouts, New Jersey Youth Symphony, Odyssey of the Mind, Soup kitchens and senior facilities. I coach and mentor children in Robotics, Engineering and Science to help our children break barriers in the industry.

"Having grown up in 3 different continents, I'm multicultural and bring a wealth of diversity to the BOE."

2. What goals do you want to accomplish on the BOE?

  • "Look to assist the Board with the Finances with my Wall Street background and prepare the district for the future
  • "Build more mental health awareness in the schools and ensuring schools have resources to support the students.
  • "Shift our curriculum with more STEM in line with the community at all grades being an Engineer myself
  • "Reinstate the BOE Special Education Subcommittee to review the needs of our children especially after the pandemic.
  • "Put in honest hard work for the betterment of our children and ensure they have skills in line with the work industry."

3. What is the number one problem you feel needs to be addressed in Millburn's education system?

"Building empathy, mindfulness and mental health awareness."
