Community Gathers At New 9/11 Memorial In Millburn

Millburn residents and police officers reflected on those lost in the 9/11 attacks 20 years ago at the new installation in Crescent Park.

MILLBURN, NJ — Community members and police officers gathered at Crescent Park on Saturday for the unveiling of Millburn's new 9/11 memorial.

The installation designed by artist Sarah Langsam was revealed to the public on Saturday morning. It is dedicated to the 412 first responders and eight Millburn Township residents who lost their lives that day, which is represented by the 420 rings in the sculpture.

Langsam's memorial consists of four elements — two metal sculptures and two benches.

According to the township's website,"In using two of each element, the installation references the two towers where those commemorated lost their lives.

"The semi-circular shape of each element is a nod to the millwheel and Millburn’s history. The two sculptures sit parallel to each other, so when one sees the installation head on, it looks as if the rings are interlocking. As one moves around the circle the appearance of the installation changes. The inclusion of benches transforms the area into a meeting space, inviting the public to sit and reflect. "

The installation is made out of actual steel pieces that were retrieved from the World Trade Center that are now in the town's possession.
