Millburn Fire Department to Host 17th Annual Open House on Oct. 1

In honor of National Fire Prevention week, the Fire Department has organized a variety of events and demonstrations for the whole family.

The Millburn Fire Department would like to invite Township Residents to its 17th annual open house on Saturday, Oct. 1, from noon until 3 p.m.

The event being held rain or shine will be at Fire Headquarters located at 459 Essex Street in downtown Millburn, next to the Law Enforcement Building. Visitors are asked not to park across the street at the Wells Fargo Bank parking lot but to park in one of the nearby municipal lots.

Sponsored in partnership by the Millburn Fireman’s Mutual Benevolent Association, and The Millburn Fireman’s Welfare Association, several exhibits will be set up and demonstrations presented. Demonstrations will include the fire departments rescue truck with the “Jaws of Life” automobile extrication tool, a Fire Engine, and the departments 93-foot Ladder Tower Truck.

The departments Thermal Imaging Camera and Brush Truck will also be on display. Parents are encouraged to bring a camera for the many photo opportunities. In addition the Millburn First Aid Squad and Police Department will be on hand to answer any questions and to offer safety tips.

The open house coincides with National Fire Prevention Week, which runs from Oct. 4 through Oct. 11. Fire Prevention week marks the anniversary of the Great Chicago Fire, which occurred Oct. 9, 1871. On that day fire swept through the city killing 250 people and destroying 17,430 buildings, making it one of the worst conflagrations in American history. After the tragedy fire prevention codes were written that required safer building and construction standards.
