Millburn Ranks 4th out of 25 in Manhattan

Almost 200 teams gathered at Van Cortlandt Park this past Saturday, to compete in the 40th Manhattan Invitational, a premier Cross Country event with the sport’s biggest names and winning teams.

The Millburn boys cross country team took 4th place out of 25 teams vying for the top spots in the Boys Varsity B race in the high school's first time competing the at the invitational. 

Millburn also boasted on impressive 5 medals out of their seven runners, which recognized those competitors placing in the top 75 places of the total field of 176 runners.

Coming off this victory, the Millers will be competing next Friday to defend their Essex County title on Oct. 26 at Brookdale Park. They will go head to head with their rivals Livingston, Seton Hall, and Bloomfield.

Millburn showed off their talent with a 7th place finish by Robert Stone with a time of 13:07.4. Also notable were the other medal-winning performances by Christopher Shim (13:24.6), Matthew DeShaw (13:40.4), Steven Cohen (13:57.4) and Christopher Stone (14:10.9).

Millburn’s showing was impressive considering the hilly nature of the course and the fact that many of their Varsity squad had no prior experience running Van Cortlandt Park. The competition was stiff, with teams from numerous states.

Another highlight was the afternoon’s Eastern States’ Championship Race featuring Edward Cheserek, the #1 high school runner in the country, and Christian Brothers Academy, the #1 team in the country. Cheserek, of NJ’s St. Benedict’s Prep, took the individual top spot with a time of 11:58.7, which was the second fastest time ever run on this iconic 2.5 mile course. Christian Brothers took the top team spot with an average time of 12:44.6.
