MILLBURN, NJ — Millburn will unveil its new September 11 memorial at Crescent Park, in honor of this year's 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

On Saturday, the public is invited to view the new memorial designed by artist Sarah Langsam in Crescent Park, adjacent to the Short Hills Train Station. The memorial, which will be unveiled at 11 a.m., serves as a dedication to the 412 first responders and eight Millburn Township residents who lost their lives that day and all those impacted.

The focal element of the memorial is actual steel pieces that were retrieved from the World Trade Center that are now in the town's possession. There are 419 rings in the sculpture to memorialize the 412 first responders and seven Millburn residents who died in the attacks.

In a pamphlet that describes the new memorial, Langsam reflected on that day and explained the significance of the memorial's location.

"On September 11, 2001, I was in elementary school just three and a half miles from
Crescent Park. Everyone I know, who lived around here then, has their individual
memories and experience of that day," Langsam wrote. "Yet we also share a special bond with one another. We remember the profound hurt, sorrow, and shock. But we also remember how the community came together through the outpouring of love, support, and patriotism."

The pamphlet also contains a narrative by Bill Pollock — a lifelong Millburn resident and retired Millburn Police Officer who helped obtain the steel pieces for the memorial. You can read more about the memorial and view photos here.

Millburn Township posted some photos to Twitter of the installation of Langsam's sculpture.
