Sheriff Launches Back-To-School Giveaway Event In Essex County

Essex County's new sheriff says he's rolling out a new tradition: a back-to-school giveaway for local children.

ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Essex County’s new sheriff says he’s rolling out a new tradition: a back-to-school giveaway for local children.

Amir Jones – who won an election to replace retired sheriff Armando Fontoura last year – is launching his first large community event since being sworn in last January.

Jones and the Essex County Sheriff’s Office Community Engagement Unit will provide 500 backpacks laden with school supplies to children from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 at Glenfield Park in Montclair.

The free, family-friendly event will also include a free BBQ dinner, ice cream from Urban Cone, family-friendly tunes from DJ Tah, and a movie under the stars to close out the night.

“This day is about more than giving out supplies,” Jones said. “I want our kids to know we’re here for them — not just to keep them safe, but to support their dreams, their families, and their futures.”

The sheriff added a message of encouragement for local parents.

“As you send your kids off to school, I’m sending off mine,” he said. “This is our chance to start the year together in unity, to create memories that remind every student they have an entire county rooting for them.”
