Results: Election Day in Montclair, Essex County

Results according to the Essex County Clerk's office confirm a Democratic sweep of the Freeholders At Large positions and more.

County Registrar - Winner: Rone

  • WINNER Dana Rone - Rone served as a Newark Councilwoman for two years, from July 2006 till August 2008. She is currently an urban education consultant and is known for advocating for low-income housing residents and the children in Newark’s public schools.
  • James Boydston - Ran uncontested for the Republican nomination.

County Executive - Winner: DiVincenzo

  • Peter H. Tanella (R) - Tanella is a former mayor of Cedar Grove and has been a councilman in the town since 2005. He ran unopposed in the Republican primary for the position.

Essex County Freeholders - Winners: Seabold, Johnson, Jones and Gill.

All nine of the Essex County Freeholders positions are up for election this term, yet eight candidates are vying for the four Freeholder At Large seats.

The Democratic candidates are:

  • WINNER Patricia Seabold (D) - Seabold is the current Vice President of the Board of Chosen Freeholders, a position she served in several times prior to this term. The Livingston resident was first appointed to the board in 1993.
  • WINNER Rufus L. Johnson (D) - Johnson is running for his third term on the board, he was first elected to an At Large position in November 2008. He has acted as Ronald Rice’s Chief of Staff since 1998. Johnson is a Newark resident who is active in the community; he is a co-founder and coach of the Newark Optimist Club Little League and the Newark Pop Warner Football League.
  • WINNER Lebby C. Jones (D) - Jones has served as a councilwoman in Irvington for the past 20 years and is running for freeholder for the first time. In 1998 Jones was elected an At Large member of the South Ward Council in Irvington, she was re-elected to the same position in 2002, 2006 and 2010.
  • WINNER Brendan W. Gill (D) - Montclair resident Gill was first known to many as “Mr.Gill’s son,” but has altered that reputation during his first term in office. He was elected District 5 Freeholder in 2011 and has served as a top advisor to the late U.S. Senator Frank Lautenberg since 2007. Gill is also chairs the Democratic Party of Montclair.

  • John Anello (R) - The Caldwell resident is vying for his first term as freeholder.
  • Adam Kraemer (R) - Kramer is a Livingston resident seeking his first term in office, he is a Columbia Teachers College graduate.
  • Ryan Funsch (R) - Funsch is a Montclair State graduate, he was a press intern in Governor Chris Christie’s Communication and Press Office and a campaign intern for The Passaic County Regular Republican Organization.
  • Ricardo Alonso (R) - The Caldwell resident is seeking his first term in office.

District Five Freeholder Candidates - Winner: Toro

  • WINNER Cynthia Toro (D) - Toro is a Bloomfield resident and social worker running for her first term as Freeholder. She is looking to use her professional background to help influence policy decisions.
  • John V. Kelly, III (R) - Kelly is a Nutley resident and a lawyer. He is running for his first term as freeholder.
