MORRIS PLAINS, NJ — A local resident claims to have been the victim of a "grandparent scam" and the Morris Plains Police Department and the Morris County Sheriff's CrimeStoppers Unit are now asking the public for assistance in identifying the suspect.

According to police reports, the perpetrator of a grandparent's scam received $9,850 in cash from the victim and displayed a firearm.

According to police, around 5:15 p.m. on Friday, October 21, a man called the victim and pretended to be a New York prosecutor. Police said he informed the victim that her grandson was involved in a car accident with a pregnant woman and required $9,850 in cash bail.

The man then instructed the woman to meet him at the Morris Plains Municipal Building with the cash. Police believe he followed her and directed her to the Dunkin' Donuts parking lot on Speedwell Avenue in Morris Plains.

The man then took the money and displayed a firearm he was wearing on the inside of his jacket, police said.
