Synagogue Threats Spur Increased Patrols, Vigilance In Morristown

MORRISTOWN, NJ — Morristown police have increased patrols and the law enforcement presence in response to an FBI warning of a broad threat to synagogues in New Jersey, police said Thursday evening.

The local police response comes after the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued an alert to New Jersey synagogues on Thursday, warning of a "broad threat" and urging staff to take precautions.

"We will continue to closely monitor all information disseminated by law enforcement intelligence sources," Michael C. Corcoran Jr., the Director of Public Safety said.

Although Morristown has not received any specific threats, police say they will continue to increase patrols in all sensitive areas.

The FBI issued the warning Thursday afternoon saying it had "received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ," the alert read. "We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility."

According to Matt Platkin, the attorney general of New Jersey, local, state, and federal agencies were working together to coordinate law enforcement efforts. He also urged everyone to exercise caution.

"Please do not be alarmed if you observe an increase in police presence as we are taking these steps in an abundance of caution," Platkin said. "We also call upon New Jersey residents to be extra vigilant and if you see suspicious activity please report it to your local authorities without delay."

Law enforcement officials urged anyone who sees something unusual or of concern, to call 911 or call the Morristown Police Department immediately.
