Alleged Carjackers Arrested After Chase Through Newark

Two 15-year-olds and a 22-year-old snatched the keys to the car from a woman's purse, police said.

Two Newark teens and a man from East Orange were arrested early Saturday morning after allegedly leading cops on a chase throughout the city in a vehicle that had been carjacked.

According to a release from Newark Sgt. Ron Glover, cops responded to the tens block of Bloomfield Avenue after 6 a.m. Saturday when a woman reported the three men approached her, pulled off her purse, took the keys to her Nissan Murano, and fled in her vehicle.

Newark police officers saw the vehicle near Broad and South streets, and the three, “led police on a chase through Newark,” Glover said in the release. “The pursuit finally ended when the driver of the vehicle struck a parked car on the tens block of Blum Street.”

Ronald B. Jones, 22, of East Orange, and the two 15-year-olds in the car led police on a brief foot chase before being arrested, police said.

All three were charged with carjacking, conspiracy, obstruction of justice and resisting arrest, Glover said. The juvenile driving the car was also charged with eluding, cops said.

Police Director Samuel DeMaio released a statement commending officers for their “quick response,” to the incident.
