NEWARK, NJ — A hard rain is expected to fall in Newark, and local drivers should be careful to avoid flooded streets if it happens, authorities said Tuesday.

More than five inches of rain, severe thunderstorms across most of the state and flash flooding are all possible Tuesday into Wednesday for New Jersey, weather forecasters say. See Related: Tropical Storm Debby: Latest Forecast For NJ Impacts

As they’ve done in the past, Newark public safety officials warned drivers to avoid several streets that are prone to flooding if the rain starts pouring down. The list includes:

“The Department of Public Safety is coordinating responses to burglar alarms, flooding conditions, and other weather-related incidents through the combined use of police, fire and Office of Emergency Management personnel,” Newark authorities said Tuesday.

Special attention should be given to unsecured outdoor furniture, awnings, refuse, and building materials, officials said.

“For fire safety, please utilize flashlights, instead of candles, should you lose electricity due to this weather event,” officials added.

Here is the local weather forecast for Newark this week, according to the National Weather Service:

Tuesday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 90. Heat index values as high as 96. Northwest wind around 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tuesday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. Low around 67. North wind 6 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Wednesday: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Cloudy, with a high near 72. Northeast wind around 11 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Wednesday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. Northeast wind around 8 mph.

Thursday: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 77. East wind 9 to 11 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph.

Thursday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Friday: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. High near 79. Chance of precipitation is 90%.

Friday Night: Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Low around 70. Chance of precipitation is 80%.
