Drug Arrest Yields Two Community Guns

Knight has several prior arrests

Police seized two weapons believed to be “community guns” during a drug arrest involving a 21-year-old city man Tuesday, the department said in a statement.

The narcotics-gang enforcement unit was on patrol around 1 pm near 10 Fairmount Ave. when they reportedly witnessed Fuquan Knight conduct a drug transaction. After Knight was arrested, detectives found 20 decks of heroin and two loaded 9mm handguns Knight had stashed nearby. One of the guns was stolen in South Carolina and the serial number on the other had been defaced, police said.

Knight, who has an extensive arrest record, was charged with numerous narcotics and weapons violations.

"I am very pleased that not only were we able to recover two ‘community guns’ as a result of this surveillance operation but we were also able to make an arrest in this instance. The weapons recovered are referred to as ‘community guns’ because they are stashed in a central location allowing several criminals within a network quick access to these firearms,” said Police Director Samuel DeMaio. “These weapons are particularly problematic in that they are easily accessible and often used in multiple crimes by multiple suspects.”
