The John F. Kennedy Recereation Center was the scene for a New Jersey Golden Gloves boxing tournament Saturday.
Sponsored by the city of Newark, the Pan American Boxing Organization and Essex Plaza Management, nine bouts in weight classes from 106 lbs. to 165 lbs. were held, drwing pugilists from throughout the state.
A number of boxers Saturday came from the Aspira Boxing Club of Newark. David Romero, 106. lbs., defeated Jamal Bland of the Asbury Park Police Athletic League in a third-round decision. Angelo Thompson, fighting at 152 lbs., lost to Kevin Lushen. Aspira's Jaquan Smith, 141 lbs., won a third-round decision against Alex Solis of Trenton's As Fit Gym. Pedro Muniz of Aspira lost to Adam Ali of the Bergen County PAL in a third-round decision at 131 lbs.
