Man Dies During Police Foot Chase On Route 280, State Says
A man pursued by Newark officers on foot Thursday died during the police chase, state officials said.
NEWARK, NJ - A man pursued by Newark officers on foot Thursday died during the police chase, state officials said.
The individual, whose identity was not immediately made public by state officials, was pursued on foot in Newark in connection with a criminal investigation, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.
During the pursuit, the man collapsed on an embankment along Route 280 near mile marker 12.8. He was transported to University Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 4:41 p.m., the state office said.

Per state law, the Attorney General’s Office is required to investigate deaths during law enforcement encounters or while the decedent is in custody. All investigations are also mandated to be shown to a grand jury to determine if the evidence supports the return of an indictment against any officers involved.
The investigation is ongoing and no further information is being released at this time, the state office said.
