NJ Transit is upgrading its bus fleet with a delivery of 175 "modernized" vehicles. Here's what riders can expect when they step onboard.

NEWARK, NJ — NJ Transit is upgrading its fleet of buses with a delivery of 175 “modernized” vehicles, officials announced Monday.
According to NJ Transit, the new fleet of 40-foot New Flyer buses will arrive between late September and June 2026.
The vehicles each cost $850,000. They are projected to have lifespans of 12 years/500,000 miles, NJ Transit officials said at a press conference in Newark earlier this week (watch video below).

The buses will include USB charging ports, brighter LED interior lighting and improved intercom systems. They will also feature low-floor design with ramps, which will improve boarding for seniors and riders with disabilities.
The buses also feature enhanced safety and security measures such as onboard security cameras, blind-spot cameras to assist bus operators and turn-warning systems to alert pedestrians when buses are making turns.

The upgrades are part of a plan to replace or modernize every outdated bus and rail car by 2031. Since 2018, NJ Transit has authorized the purchase of more than 1,400 buses with a total investment of more than $1.7 billion.
“The arrival of these new buses marks another milestone toward our 2031 fleet modernization goal — and a better experience for every customer who rides with us,” NJ Transit president and CEO Kris Kolluri said.
NJ Transit provides more than 925,000 weekday trips on 263 bus routes, three light rail lines, 12 commuter rail lines and through Access Link paratransit service. It is the third largest transit system in the country with 165 rail stations, 62 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops linking major points in New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia.
