Newark Animal Shelter ‘At Capacity’ For Large Dogs – Can You Help?
No animals are in danger due to lack of space, the Associated Humane Societies said. But adopters, fosters and rescues are urgently needed.

NEWARK, NJ — An animal shelter in Newark has put out a call for help after reaching full capacity for large dogs.
According to the Associated Humane Societies (AHS), its Newark facility is bursting with plus-size canine companions, and help is urgently needed – whether it be via adoption, fostering or rescue.

“We are so full! Summer is the busiest time of year for our shelter. Families are taking vacation, so there are less adopters and fosters, we get animal surrenders and strays daily and the kittens are nonstop. Right now, our shelter is full to capacity with large dogs. We want to make it clear that no animals are in danger due to lack of space. But at this time, we are looking for assistance wherever we can find it – adopters, fosters and most importantly rescues.”
“There are beautiful dogs just like Lakota here waiting to find their forever home,” the shelter wrote, sharing a photo of a fuzzy doggo with a “calm and laid-back boy with a happy personality.”
That need continues, an AHS spokesperson told Patch on Thursday.

Some of the recent dogs posted to the AHS-Newark social media pages include:
- Sanford - "Sanford, a 4 year old pittie mix has had a tough go at life. His Sanford has trouble trusting unfamiliar faces, so he wants the chance to get to know you! Being wary of new faces, it takes him time getting to know and be comfortable with new people. Understandably, being in a shelter has only increased his stress level. Sanford is looking for an adult only family to help him to re-establish trust in a warm and supportive environment." Watch his video here.
- Penny - "Pretty Penny is a shy little thing, but when she sees that camera she’s all smiles! Penny is a 2 year old girl that was recently surrendered to the shelter. She’s a friendly girl who’s just a little shy around new people so we always suggest giving her some time to get used to you." Watch her video here.
- Blanco - "2 year old Labrador Retriever Blanco loves to show off to our staff and volunteers. He’s an adorable boy waiting for the right family to come around. Blanco is looking for an adult only forever family. He’s pretty friendly around other dogs, but we think a dog with a calmer personality would benefit Blanco." See his photos here.
- Kenzie - "This 6 year old pittie is sugar, spice and everything nice! Kenzie is a joy and her smile just lights up the room. Kenzie was recently surrendered and looking for her second chance. Kenzie is looking for a home with either older kids/teens or adults. She is also looking for a forever home without other pets." Watch her video here.
