Newark Mourns Firefighter After Unexpected Death At 46
"He was a role model exemplar, and inspiration to not only his colleagues – but our entire city," Newark's mayor said of Rafael Padilla.
NEWARK, NJ — The Newark Fire Department is mourning one of its own, Rafael Padilla, who unexpectedly died at the age of 46 last week.
According to the Newark Department of Public Safety, the longtime firefighter passed away on Dec. 8.
Padilla joined the Newark Fire Division on April 8, 2008. His last assignment was at Engine 27, located at 87-89 Elm Road in Newark, where he was a highly respected, dedicated and distinguished firefighter, officials said.

“We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers to the family, friends, and colleagues of Firefighter Rafael Padilla, a dedicated firefighter who bravely served the City of Newark for 15 years,” Mayor Ras Baraka said.
“He was a role model exemplar, and inspiration to not only his colleagues – but our entire city,” Baraka said.

Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé said the entire division of safety is mourning Padilla’s death.
“We especially offer our fervent prayers for his beloved wife and three sons, along with each member of the Newark Fire Division, as we all grapple with this devasting loss,” Fragé said.
