NEWARK, NJ — Joy, positivity and “faith in God.” These are some of the secrets to longevity that Newark resident Edith Constance Williams (Hossaic) has discovered in her 100 years of life.

Williams’ granddaughter, Tamika Jones, recently reached out to Patch with a message of congratulations for the centenarian – who celebrates her 100th birthday on Friday – describing her beloved family member as “an amazing woman.”

Williams, who raised two daughters and was married twice, has since retired from the medical field. But according to Jones, she continues to inspire people with her faith and her sense of humor, which she isn’t afraid to wield in the name of peace when her family members aren’t getting along.

“My grandmother and I became close after I graduated from high school,” Jones said. “I have learned so much about my ancestors from her.”

Over the years, the pair have kept in touch by talking on the phone at least once a month. And there’s always the memories of her grandma’s home cooking to fill in the blanks in between, Jones said.

“She’s a great baker,” Jones emphasized. “Her biscuits are better than KFC and Popeyes. And she made amazing lemon merengue pie every year for Thanksgiving.”

Patch got the chance to ask Williams a big question: “What is the secret to making it to 100-years-old?” Here is her reply, according to her granddaughter: “Edith believes that the secret to making it this far in life is living life. Live with joy and positivity. Believe and have faith in God. Don’t smoke or drink and try and keep moving.”
