Newark's Newest School Will Train Students For Media Careers (Here's When It Will Open)
New Media High School will be located near Lionsgate Studios' in-development movie studio.
NEWARK, NJ — An opening date has been set for the Newark Public School District’s newest school: New Media High.
The school is expected to welcome its first students in September 2026. It will specialize in preparing students for careers in content creation, video media production and entertainment management.
New Media High School will be located at the former site of the Dayton Street Elementary School, near Weequahic Park and adjacent to where Lionsgate Studios is scheduled to open its new 270,000-square-foot production facilities.

The school will be the 12th to open since Superintendent Roger León was appointed in 2018.
“We are building a school where students can learn industry-standard tools, collaborate with one another, and benefit from real-world experiences that prepare them to thrive in media, entertainment, and beyond,” León said.
Board of Education President Hasani Council said New Media High School will represent a step forward in the district’s mission to create “meaningful, forward-looking career pathways” for its students.
“We are excited to continue building schools that place Newark students at the forefront of innovation and creativity,” Council said.
