Sentaor Rice Announces Hearing on Newark Public Schools Enrollment Problems

Senator Rice will host a hearing on Sept. 2 for parents and the community to express their concerns regarding enrollment problems.

State Senator Ronald L. Rice today announced that he will host a public hearing next week at Newark City Hall to hear from parents and members of the community regarding the problems they are experiencing with the enrollment process under the Newark Public Schools “One Newark” plan.

The hearing will be hosted by Senator Rice and Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, who serve as co-chairs of the state Joint Committee on the Public Schools. Senator Rice also has invited members of the Essex County delegation to attend.
“I am deeply concerned about the problems parents are experiencing with the district’s enrollment process. I have serious concerns that these issues will not be resolved in a timely manner and, given the that has persisted, I fear there may be other challenges parents are dealing with at the district level,” Senator Rice said.

“This hearing will give parents and members of the community a public forum to discuss enrollment problems they have encountered, as well as any other issues that may be related to the district’s One Newark plan,” Senator Rice added. “In addition, it will allow lawmakers to place on the record the full scope of issues plaguing the school system in order to ensure they are dealt with appropriately by the district and the state.”
