Take A Dog For A Day Trip: New Program Launches At Newark Animal Shelter
"These dogs aren't broken – they're just waiting for a chance."

NEWARK, NJ — For a human, it’s a short trip to the woods or the beach. But for more than 100 dogs currently in custody at the Associated Humane Societies shelter in Newark, it can be a much-needed break while they wait for a forever home.
The AHS-Newark recently launched a new program that helps to get some of their residents out of the shelter for a day trip – and more volunteers are needed.
Here’s how it works, the shelter reported:

“Looking for a fun, easy way to make a big difference in a shelter dog’s life? Our Adventure Tails program lets you take a dog out for the day—whether it's a hike, a trip to the beach, or a cozy afternoon at home. These short-term foster or day trip adventures help our pups relax, recharge, and get seen by potential adopters! No prior dog experience? No problem! Whether you're a lifelong dog lover or just getting started, there's a dog who would love to spend the day with you.”

So far, the new program has been a big hit: more than 150 applications have rolled in since it launched. With up to 10 new dogs arriving at the busy shelter every day – and the building breaching its capacity – the help is much welcomed, staff said.

MEET SOME OF THE DOGS AT AHS-NEWARK
The program is already paying off for some well-deserving doggos, according to AHS-Newark:
RANDY – “Meet Randy—he hit the beach and crushed a trail hike on his own adventure day, and came back with a wagging tail and a full heart. He’s one of our longest residents at 300+ days and these shelter breaks help him while he waits for a home!” (ID # 75310)
JELLY – “Jelly spent his special day exploring the Sawmill Creek Trail, lounging in the grass, squeaking his new toys, and being an all-around 10/10 good boy. He was calm, polite, and friendly to everyone he met — people, dogs, squirrels, and birds included! He did great in the car and was happy to get a break from the shelter!” (ID # 81738)
CHAI – “Chai just had the BEST day ever thanks to our Adventure Tails Day Out program! This very, very good girl hit the trails at High Point State Park and was a total angel on the hour-long car ride—laid down the whole way like a seasoned road tripper. After her hike, she got a relaxing bath, some backyard fetch time, and plenty of love. Chai was incredibly friendly with every person she met. Sweet, easygoing, and full of love—she’s a total gem.” (ID # 83581)
