Teen Accused of Carjacking Newark Police Officer

Several carjackings allegedly committed by youth since the start of the month.

A 17-year-old city resident wanted for the June 2 carjacking and robbery of a Newark police sergeant was arrested Tuesday, department spokesman Sgt. Ron Glover said.

The youth was arrested at his home on 18th Avenue and charged with carjacking, robbery and conspiracy.

"I commend the Newark Police Department's Fugitive Apprehension Unit for their exemplary investigative work which led to the apprehension of this individual,” Police Director Samuel DeMaio said.

There have been several carjackings in recent days involving teens. A 15-year-old was shot by police Monday after he was seen traveling in a car taken on Oliver Street, police said. Over the weekend, two other 15-year-olds were arrested after allegedly leading police on a chase through the city.
