Veterans Day In Newark: Closures, Service Changes, Court, Trash/Recycling

Newark City Hall will be closed for the holiday on Tuesday. Here are some other things for local residents to know.

NEWARK, NJ — Newark City Hall will be closed and most non-emergency municipal services will be suspended on Tuesday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day. Police, fire and other uniformed emergency services will be unaffected.

The holiday is held to honor the nation’s veterans for their “patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good,” according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

Here are some things to know for the upcoming holiday, according to an advisory from the city:

GARBAGE/RECYCLING - Trash and paper recycling will be picked up by the city as scheduled for Zone B on Tuesday, Nov. 11. However, alternate side of the street parking regulations will not be enforced.

CITY SERVICES - The Department of Health and Community Wellness’s inspection services, WIC program, Animal and Vermin Control services and health center will not operate on Tuesday, Nov. 11. In addition, the Bureau of Vital Statistics will be closed. Residents will not be able to pick up birth, marriage and death certificates, but can apply on-line. The Medical Director and Department’s Division of Surveillance and Prevention will be on call for medical and public health emergencies.

BILLS - Water and tax bill payments will not be received at City Hall on Veterans Day.

COURT - The Municipal Court will also be closed, however, a judge will be available to preside over bail hearings for defendants in custody. Residents can make payments on parking and traffic tickets through the website www.njmcdirect.com. To utilize this website, residents will need their summons number, including the prefix, and the City of Newark’s court code, which is 0714.
