New Brunswick Mayor Cahill, Council Allies Will Seek Re-Election

Also, the New Brunswick Democratic Organization is currently looking for candidates to run, as the Council increases from 5 to 7 seats.

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — On Thursday, New Brunswick Mayor James Cahill and Council members Kevin Egan and Rebecca Escobar announced they will seek re-election this year.

It is currently unknown if anyone will run against them. All three are Democrats.

Political newcomers Petra Gaskins and Manuel Castaneda will also run; Gaskins will seek a seat with a four-year term; Castaneda is running for a seat with an initial two-year term, with four-year terms thereafter.

Cahill, a lifelong New Brunswick resident, is currently in his eighth term as mayor. Egan was elected to the City Council in 2011 and is the council president. He works in construction, and as the business representative for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 456. Escobar was elected to the City Council in 2010 and is council vice president.

The mayor and his two Council allies will ask voters to re-elect them to another four-year term. The primary is June 7 and the general election is November 8.

2022 is also a big year for New Brunswick, because this is the first year the City Council will increase in size. The New Brunswick City Council will expand from five to seven seats.

One new council slot will be a four-year term; the other will be a two-year term.

The New Brunswick Democratic Organization is currently looking for candidates to run for these two newly created seats.
