New Brunswick Native Receives Emerging Leader Award

De Andre Woods-Walker is a student at Southwestern University in Texas.

De Andre Woods-Walker of New Brunswick has received the 2013 Emerging Leader Award from Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. The award was presented at the university's 15th Annual Student Leadership Banquet April 16.

The Emerging Leader Award is given to a student whose current leadership experience, philosophy and outlook are likely to be integral as that student continues to be a contributing and committed member of the Southwestern community.

Award recipients are nominated by students and faculty members and are then sent a list of questions to answer, including their personal philosophy of leadership. The winners are chosen by members of Omicron Delta Kappa, the national leadership honor society.

In his definition of leadership, Woods-Walker quoted John C. Maxwell, who said "People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care."

Woods-Walker is a sophomore at Southwestern University and is majoring in elementary/special education and communication studies with a minor in Chinese. Activities he has been involved with include the Coalition for Diversity and Social Justice, Student Philanthropy Council and EBONY. He also is a Resident Assistant.

Woods-Walker is the son of DeaLana Woods of New Brunswick and Andre Walker of Manhattan. He is a graduate of Central College Prep.
