Poll: Should Taxes Be Increased for New Jersey Millionaires?

Democrats want people in the state's highest income bracket to pay more in taxes. Gov. Chris Christie has refused to discuss the issue and has promised to veto any tax hike that comes his way.

So the Democrats in the state Legislature say they are prepared to put the question on the ballot in 2013 -- when Christie will be running for a second term.

"If we need to do this by referendum because the governor refuses to bend, then so be it," Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) told NJ.com. "But then the public should know that they waited for two years because the governor sided with the wealthiest 1 percent over the 99 percent."

An Assembly budget plan that included the tax hike on millionaires passed, though Christie has promised a veto. He vetoed similar measures in 2010 and 2011.

Polls have shown that New Jersey voters support the millionaires' tax, though they also support most of the governor's other reforms, including an income tax cut.
