Rutgers Faculty Union Announced Student Scholarship Winners

Three Rutgers students were chosen to receive scholarships of $1,500 or $2,500.

Rutgers AAUP-AFT has announced the recipients of of the Wells H. Keddie Scholarship for 2013.

The organization provided the following descriptions of the student honorees:

  • Stephanie Rivera (School of Arts and Science, New Brunswick), $2,500 for her strong academic record and national advocacy for public schools and teachers through Students United for Public Education and her blog, Teacher Under Construction (Julia Rubin, nominator; Sandee McHugh-McBride, recommender)
  • Giancarlo Tello (Department of Political and Applied Science, Newark), $2,500 for his strong academic record and leadership on tuition equity for undocumented students in New Jersey and comprehensive immigration reform in Washington, DC (Aramis Gutierrez, nominator; Timothy Raphael, recommender)
  • Lauren Carlbon (Department of Public Policy and Administration, Urban Studies Program, Camden), $1,500 for her strong academic record and activism in the global movement for peace by organizing five peace marches (Lorraine Minnite, nominator; Melissa Yates and Tom Knoche, recommenders)

According to the organization, the scholarship was established in 2005 to honor the late Wells H. Keddie, a Labor Studies professor at Rutgers, and past president of the Rutgers AAUP-AFT.
