Somerset Medical Center has announced an intent to merge with Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, according to a report on NJ.com.
According to the report, the two medical centers have been in talks since 2011 to merge their operations.
In a prepared statement, RWJ Board of Directors chairman John Lumpkin said the move is a sign of a trend in healthcare nationwide.
"As our nation’s healthcare system continues to evolve into one which ensures the health of entire populations rather than focus on delivering episodes of care, this new strategic partnership with Somerset Medical Center better enables us to care for the people of the region,” Lumpkin said.
It is the second major medical consolidation in New Brunswick, where a Rutgers University-UMDNJ merger has been in the news for the last year.
