Erotic comedy is a genre not often seen around these parts, but George Street Playhouse's latest is just that, encompassed in a sex-charged and satisfying story.
Based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's "Venus in Furs," which is famously known for its erotic themes, David Ives' play "Venus in Fur" is about a young writer's quest to cast a play that he has adapted from the famous novel.
The gregarious Vanda bursts through his door, the epitome of what Thomas does not want in an actress, but she is able to capture his attention and the two volley power, submission and seduction back and forth.

A 90-minute play performed by two actors on a single set without an intermission can be a tall order for an audience. But the show is quickly paced and witty with dialogue that swells and breaks for a laugh when emotions run high.
Venus is almost a mystery of sorts as you work to figure out who the characters really are, their true motivations revealed not so much in words, but in their facial expressions, outfit changes, whether or not they are reading from a script, what they are wearing. It requires masterful direction and acting to be able to tell a story this way, and Venus has it.

I don't recall ever being envious of an actress for the role she is playing, but Jenni Putney's Vanda is a fabulous character that fills every corner of the stage with her personality.
Mark Alhadeff's Thomas is a mystery figure that seems like a simple character at the beginning of the play but begins to drop hints as to what he has underneath. They are fun to follow and connect through to the play's emotionally charged final moments.
Sexy, nuanced, and very funny, Venus in Fur will run at George Street Playhouse through May 18.
Due to the sexual themes of Venus in Fur, the playhouse has advised that the production is best suited for patrons over age 17.
