Five Things You Need To Know Today: May 22

Here is what's happening in New Providence and around the county today.

1. Louise Schoonover Smith will present her book that documents the life and work of Frank E. Schoonover — a celebrated 20th century illustrator — at the New Providence Memorial Library today. Smith will host a discussion and slide show of Schoonover's paintings from 3 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. in the Conti Family Community Room.

2. The New Jersey Ballet is presenting Sleeping Beauty at the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online at mayoarts.org.

3. Novelist Tom Perrotta will speak at the Union County College Cranford Campus, located at 1033 Springfield Avenue in Cranford, at 2 p.m. today. Perotta is the author of Bad Haircut, The Wishbones, Election and the New York Times bestselling Joe College and Little Children. This event is free and open to the public. 4. The Union County Performing Arts Center is hosting Jim West's Dinosaurs at 2 p.m. today at 1601 Irving St. in Rahway. Tickets are $12 and $15, and may be purchased at www.ucpac.org.

5. Yo Ho, it is a Pirates movie day for you? The much anticipated Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released on Friday and will be playing at AMC Loews Mountainside 10 movie theater on Rt. 22 at several times today: 10:30 a.m., 1:40 p.m., 3:10 p.m., 5 p.m., 6:15 p.m., 8:15 p.m., 9:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
